All Season Roofing Guide (About Ice, Plant decay & Compression)

All Season Roofing, With the changing seasons, roof maintenance is extremely important in extending the lifespan of your roof. There are many factors including ice, plant decay, compression, and expansion.

All Season Roofing Guide

Here are some tips on how to maintain your roof to prevent these factors from damaging your roof. If your roof is damaged and in need of repair, now is the time to have it taken care of and Homestar Roofing can provide you with every solution.

Trim Back Your Trees

Fall is the time of year where the leaves begin to fall from the trees. As the leaves fall, you begin to notice the branches that may be getting close to your house. It is important to remove these branches in the fall to prevent damage to the tree and your roof. This will also minimize the number of leaves that build up on your roof.

Clean Your Gutters

Fall can be a very wet season and with the combined issue of leaves falling from the trees, your roof can become clogged. This can cause severe damage to your roof and can lead to damage of your house.

Pooling water can lead to cracking, mold, and other damage later. It is important to keep an eye on the roof to prevent clogging so that your gutters are working properly.

Check Flashing

It is important to check the flashing and siding of your homes for cracking or any movement to prevent any leakage into your home. The roof itself may be in good condition but if the connections between these roofs are damaged, the water can enter your home and cause serious damage.

The changing weather can cause your roof to shift over time which is why it is important to review and maintain any issues that may arise.

Install Gutter Guards

Most homeowners believe that the gutter system should work effectively and that it does not require maintenance. Maintaining your gutters is extremely important in increasing the longevity of your roof system. One way to minimize the work involved with clogged gutters is to install gutter guards.

These prevent leaves from entering the gutter but allow water to easily fall through due to the holes in the guards. The leaves that remain on the guard will then dry and blow away leaving you with very minimal work while also increasing the lifespan of your roofing system.

Get A Pre-Winter Roof Inspection

As winter begins to emerge, it is important to have someone look at your roof in case there are issues that may become much worse due to the weather. The winter months make it very difficult to fix any issues which is why it is important to take care of everything before the weather changes.

The longer the homeowner waits, the larger the issue becomes, and this can be extremely expensive. Homestar Roofing can help maintain your roof while helping you prevent any future issues.

Invest In Roof Repairs As Needed

Roof repairs can be an expensive job which is why it is important to tackle these issues as soon as they arise. Damage to a roof always becomes worse overtime and when the issue is not taken care of, the price of the repair increases. Maintaining the roof can help reduce cost and increase the lifespan of your roof so that you don’t have to spend your hard-earned money.

Small issues that you may not always notice can become huge problems when the weather changes. The compression and expansion due to temperature changes with the addition of ice can cause serious damage to not only your roof, but your entire home. At Homestar Roofing, our experts can help maintain and fix your roof while reducing the cost so that you can feel safe and secure in your home over the cold winter season.

Roofing and The Challenges

Home Star Roofing is always planning, scheduling appointments, and start dates for our clients. This is a very difficult task with Southern Ontario weather. Just think for a second that if you were to show up to do a job and an uninspected storm arrives. We would have to tarp the house and wait until the rain stopped.

Once the area drys up and is safe we can finish the job! During this summer there have been many rain days which pushes some roofing installations back. The more rain, high winds, and crazy weather patterns the more of a challenge it can be. Even the heat can be a challenge. We get many days well into the 30-degree mark.

This makes everyone work slower with many rest and water breaks. The staff at Home Star Roofing wants you to have patients during these bad weather patterns. Our objective is to do a safe, ontime, and professional job during for the homeowners.

Roof Replacement Education

The first question we get at Homestar roofing is “How do you know if you need to replace your single roof”.  The first thing you need to know is that shingles in Canada typically last for 15 to 20 years.  So, if you see any of the signs that I am about to tell you then most likely you need a new roof.

One of the first signs of replacing your single roof is you will start to see the corner curling up.  If you can see one curling it might be a faulty shingle and can be replaced but, if you see multiple shingles then you should call our Homestar estimator to come out and evaluate the situation.

The second bad roof sign is noticing bald spots where the small granules are missing on the shingle. Again, if you see a one-off it might be a faulty shingle and can be replaced.  When you see multiple shingles losing the granules in different areas it is time to give us a call.  Let us come with our ladders and check out the roof properly.

The third way of checking to see if you need a new shingle roof is the sign of cracked shingles. If you notice cracks or pieces missing then it is a good indication that the roof needs to be replaced.  Once more, make sure the cracks are throughout your roof and not isolated in one spot.  If it is in one spot it could be repaired and you can hold off for more years before replacing the roof.  It’s called saving you money!  LOL

The fourth way to check that the shingle roof is bad is very easy. Go outside look up at your shingle roof and if it just looks old and worn out it probably is!. This is what we call the logical approach.

Now the final way to check your shingle roof is to check out the neighbors and see if they are getting new shingle roofs. Most houses are built around the same time and if their roofs are being done most likely your does as well.

Note:  If you decide to check the shingles on your roof, do it from the ground.  Do not attempt to get on the roof yourself.  Leave that part to our shingle roof specialists.  This is what we do for a living and we follow strict safety procedures so we don’t get injured or injure someone else.  Homestar roofing is only a simple call away and we do not mind inspecting your roof! We love it!

Shingle Colours and Styles

When you go to select a shingle, you should look for a colour that works with your exterior siding, bricks, soffits, siding, and trim. The most common colours are Black, dark brown, dark gray, and light brown.

This also can allow you to be creative by using bold or new colours to stand out or choose a colour that blends perfectly. Our sales representative can also provide samples to check how a particular color looks against your house.  Our shingle suppliers have many different styles, colours and shapes to choose from which makes it easy for you to choose the perfect shingle.
